Newly Elected Archbishop Sally Sue Hernández to headline USPG Conference this June

Speakers to explore how the Church can be an agent of peace today, and how we can follow in Christ’s footsteps as peacemakers in a world marked by violence and injustice.

With wars intensifying across the Holy Land, rates of femicide in parts of Africa remaining among the highest in the world, and immigration politics continuing to deepen divisions in the UK, Anglican leaders from across the world, theologians, church partners and USPG supporters are gathering this June to explore what it means to follow Christ in a world marked by violence and injustice.

Reflecting on the relationship between peace and justice (‘Just Peace’), the conference is being headlined by the newly elected and first female Primate of the Anglican Church of Mexico, The Most Revd Alba Sally Sue Hernández Garcia, who led the gospel reading at the enthronement of the Archbishop Of Canterbury earlier this year.

The conference will also feature keynote speaker Dr Jude Lal Fernando, Associate Professor at the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin, and Director of the Trinity Centre for Post-Conflict Justice, who is a leading scholar in liberation theology, especially across Asia.

Bible studies will be led by the Rt Revd Lusa Nsenga-Ngoy, Bishop of Willesden and the Church of England’s lead bishop for interfaith engagement, whose ministry has consistently emphasised the importance of challenging prejudice and building understanding across communities. Speaking to the Church Times after a recent rally against anti-Semitism, Bishop Nsenga-Ngoy said: “The urgency of this conversation is clear: hatred, in any form, corrodes our common life and demands a collective response that is both principled and practical.”

That commitment to practical peacebuilding will be explored in conference workshops addressing reparative justice for transatlantic slavery, gender-based violence in Africa, and stories of resilience and reconciliation from churches across Asia and the Middle East.

Contributors include Kevin Farmer (Codrington Trust), the Revd Garfield Campbell (University of Leeds), the Revd Dr Carlton Turner (Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham), and Esther Kazilimani, a Mozambican Anglican public health and peace advocate, alongside USPG regional staff.

Informal evening gatherings will also provide opportunities for conversation, fellowship and renewal.

The ‘For Christ is our Peace’ USPG conference will take place at High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddesdon, UK, from 2-4 June 2026. Media interviews with keynote speakers and USPG representatives are available on request.
