Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in American men. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Local health expert shares information on the most common cancer among men In September, during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we recognize that aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the U.S. and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American men. According to the American Cancer Society there will be about 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer and roughly 35,250 deaths from prostate cancer among men in 2024. About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. In addition, there are certain risk factors for prostate cancer that men should be aware of. For example, prostate cancer is more likely to develop in older men, African American men and Caribbean men of African ancestry. About 6 in 10 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older. Despite prostate cancer’s prevalence and seriousness, many prostate cancer diagnoses do not result in death. Cancer screenings can help find cancers that may be at high risk for spreading if they are not treated. Organizations like the US Preventive Services Task Force and The American Cancer Society (ACS) have specific guidance on prostate cancer screening that can help men determine the right course of action for them. A health expert from WellMed or Optum can answer frequently asked questions, including: - What is prostate cancer and what are some of the symptoms?
- Should I be screened for prostate cancer?
- If so, what tests should I get?
- What are some factors that increase my risk for developing prostate cancer?
- How is prostate cancer treated?
