The boards of the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), which were meeting during WSAVA World Congress in Lisbon, Portugal, issued a joint statement on September 29, expressing their great sadness at the recent terrible events in Rotterdam. They said:

“If animals are abused, people are at risk and, if people are abused, animals are also at risk. This tragic fact is increasingly understood in veterinary circles and the potential risk to human life has been confirmed in this incident to devastating effect. 

“It is critical that we all learn from this disaster and, as representatives of the veterinary profession around the world, we call on governments, NGOs and stakeholders to work together to develop solutions. It is essential that we urgently create the educational resources needed to equip those working on the front line, often veterinary and medical professionals, with the knowledge to recognize the danger signs early and respond appropriately. In the meantime, we express our sincere condolences to all those caught up in these events.”
