Sushi continues to reel in UK shoppers as sales reach record levels As World Sushi Day approaches on June 18th, Seafish is celebrating its popularity in the UK where sales reached a record £228 million in the 12 months up to May 2026. New analysis from Seafish, the public body that supports the UK seafood industry, reveals that sushi is one of the UK's fastest-growing seafood categories, with retail value sales increasing by 215% over the past decade. In the last year alone, seafood sushi sales grew by 13.6%, making it one of the seafood sector's standout success stories. Richard Watson, Seafish Market Insight Analyst and author of the Sushi in Multiple Retail 2026 report, believes sushi's reputation as a healthy and convenient meal option, combined with growing interest in Japanese and wider East Asian culture, has helped drive its popularity. Richard said: “Sushi has become one of the UK's most successful seafood categories. “Sushi’s combination of health credentials, convenience and strong visual appeal continues to resonate with consumers, particularly younger shoppers. “What's especially impressive is the consistency of its growth. “While many food categories have faced challenges over the past decade, sushi has continued to attract new shoppers and increase sales year after year.” The report shows that salmon sushi is the most popular in the UK, taking up over half of sales. Launched in 2009, World Sushi Day aims to encourage even more people to try sushi with the day celebrated in restaurants, at homes and across social media through a variety of hashtags across the world.
