Manchester, MO (July 18, 2023) The Academy of St. Louis, the only accredited K-12 Catholic school for students with cognitive learning disabilities, has named Kathy Puettmann as Principal for the 2023-2024 school year.
Ms. Puettmann brings more than 30 years of academic experience to her new role at the Academy of St. Louis. Her background experience includes building programs for students with learning differences. She has extensive experience with assessment, individualizing instruction, and innovative instructional techniques for all learners.
Before taking her new role as Principal at the Academy of St. Louis, Ms. Puettmann was most recently Head of School at Barat Academy. Previously, she was the founding Associate Head of School at Miriam Academy. Ms. Puettmann has created and implemented special education and project-based enrichment programs at several private schools. She holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Supervision from Southeast Missouri State University and a Bachelor of Science in Special Education with an emphasis on Learning Disabilities from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Helping Students with Cognitive Learning Disabilities Since 2004
When the new school year begins, the Academy of St. Louis will also celebrate 20 years of continuous support for its students with a strong foundation, positive behavioral support, and the confidence they need to become successful.
The Academy of St. Louis is accredited by Cognia, the National Association of Private Catholic Schools, and is recognized by the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Specializing in providing an individualized curriculum for Kindergarten through 12th-grade students with learning disabilities and developmental delays, the Academy fills the gap for students who do not develop and learn well in other special education schools or classrooms.
“While there are other schools in St. Louis for students with learning disabilities, there are none whose learning environment is structured like the Academy of St. Louis,” said Co-founder and Executive Director Terri O’Daniel. “Our staff at the Academy of St. Louis will individualize the education plan for each student, allowing them to accelerate in their areas of strength and move slowly through their areas of difficulty.” Detailed accommodations are possible due to the Academy’s 3:1 student-to-staff ratio. Most students will transition into a two or four-year college, while others enter tech schools or become gainfully employed after graduation. The Academy of St. Louis also collaborates with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC-IHD) to provide a one-of-a-kind Transition Program, which features a framework and tools for each high school student to reach their full potential. Detailed information about all programs can be found on the Academy of St. Louis website at https://acadstl.org/about-us/.
The Academy of St. Louis was opened in 2004 by Ann Dunn and Terri O’Daniel. For twenty years, the Academy of St. Louis has provided hope, promise, and opportunity for students with learning challenges.
