Forty-One Per Cent of Confirmed Candidates in 2023 Northwest Territories Elections are Women or Non-Binary: Equal Voice Election Tracker Reveals
(OTTAWA, October 23, 2023) – The Northwest Territories continue to lead the way in promoting gender diversity in politics. 41 percent of confirmed candidates for the upcoming election identify as women and non-binary individuals, as revealed by the Equal Voice Tracker.
In 2021, The Northwest Territories became the first territory or province in Canada to reach the milestone of over 50% women representatives. In the current electoral cycle, three women candidates will be acclaimed, and NWT is on the way to continuing to have a strong presence of women in elected office.
As the campaign season unfolds, we hope to witness more history unfold. With three women acclaimed, the territories now require the election of six more women to maintain their status of gender parity in the legislative assembly.
Equal Voice commends the Northwest Territories for their progressive stance and their commitment to gender equality in politics. The representation of women and non-binary individuals in the legislative process is essential for a truly inclusive and democratic society.
