American Portfolios Continues Support of Honor Flight Long Island for Military Veterans and Upcoming Event "Listen to the Wind Gala 2022"

The Long Island-based, independent broker/dealer has been a supporter of the local chapter for more than a decade.

HOLBROOK, N.Y. (June 2, 2022)—For the seventh consecutive year, American Portfolios Financial Services, Inc. (AP)—a privately-held, independent broker/dealer that services financial advisors across the country—is proud to support the Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) “Listen to the Wind Gala 2022,” which will be held on July 16 at the Sagaponack Farm Distillery in Southampton Township.

A local chapter of the national Honor Flight Network, the non-profit organization provides military veterans free trips to visit the war memorials in Washington, D.C. For more than a decade, AP has provided support to HFLI in various ways, including volunteering and funding. In 2019, AP’s non-profit arm—The American Portfolios Foundation—pledged $25,000 in charitable funds to HFLI over a five-year period. AP-affiliated investment professional William Donahue (Holbrook, N.Y.) serves as an HFLI board member and, prior to the last two years of pandemic flight suspensions, had volunteered as a guardian on honor flights two times a year. “HFLI is grateful for the support AP has provided, which has contributed to keeping the organization viable and active with its outreach to veterans who dutifully served in the wars spanning over three-quarters of a century from World War II to Korea, and Vietnam to Iran and Iraq,” says Donahue. This is just one small way for us to honor the service and sacrifice these men and women have given to our country; this is fully realized when witnessing the emotions as they are finally granted the opportunity to visit their respective war memorial.

One such veteran, former Marine Corps Sgt. and Suffolk County’s current poet laureate, Evelyn Kandel, is being honored July 16 at the upcoming HFLI “Listen to the Wind Gala 2022,” the event of which is named after one of many poems penned by her. The gala promises to be a fun-filled evening with dinner, a silent auction and musical entertainment graciously donated by That Motown Band, a Long Island tribute band that AP CEO Lon T. Dolber started and which is gaining a local following. At 89 years old, Sgt. Kandels legacy will be celebrated as a trailblazer in being one of the first females to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve back in 1951. She served proudly for three years during the Korean War Conflict as a PR representative, appearing in photos for ads—even for a postage stamp—in conjunction with her visits to colleges on the West Coast to promote officer’s training enlistment in the Corp. In June 2021, when HFLI learned she had never received her Marine Corp blue dress uniform, AP Executive Vice President and In-House Supervisory Principal Frank A. Tauches Jr.—who served as a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corp during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and also served as past president and a current board member of the Marine Corps Reserve Association—made arrangements to obtain and present her with dress blues in gratitude for her service.

It was an honor for me to facilitate obtaining and presenting Sgt. Kandel with the newest official dress blue uniform with the high leatherneck collar, identical to the uniform worn by her male counterparts; it seemed only fair since the camouflage uniforms and aviator uniforms for both men and women in combat are the same, Tauches says of the momentous occasion. She is not only a gracious and gifted artist and poet, but, to this day, she still embodies all the qualities of a United State Marine. Semper Fidelis.

As part of the firm’s long-standing commitment to social responsibility, AP employees and affiliated colleagues are encouraged to take part in various forms of community outreach. In May 2019, prior to COVID, AP-affiliated financial advisor David Rey (David Rey Financial Group; Holbrook, N.Y.) and Sandra White (assistant to AP-affiliated financial advisor Barry S. Cohn; Holbrook, N.Y.) both served as guardians on the spring Honor Flight, which escorted 12 World War II and 37 Korean War veterans to the nation’s capital and its war memorials. HFLI not only organizes every possible detail of the trip to D.C., but also pairs veterans who cannot be accompanied by family members with guardians, whose primary role is to see to their veteran’s care, comfort and safety from departure to return.

States CEO Lon T. Dolber on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), "As part of AP's CSR commitment to serving the community, supporting and honoring the men and women who have served their country selflessly for the greater good of its citizens has really been the hinge pin that led us on the path of becoming good corporate citizens. A community cannot survive without the overall support and care of the individuals who thrive and benefit from it. Companies should be no different and that is why we have made CSR an integral part of AP's culture. I will always be grateful for the lessons learned from veterans who understand more than anyone the meaning of service."
