Press Release

7th May 2024

Filtrona launches BOREAS range of filters to support customers

in fast-growing HTP market

Filtrona, the global market leader in the design, testing, and manufacture of special filter solutions, is extending its legacy of innovation by introducing a new range of Heated Tobacco Product (HTP) filters – the BOREAS range. The launch comes amidst substantial growth in the HTP market driven by rising consumer preference for reduced risk products* and smoke-free alternatives.

The new range includes BOREAS SideFlow, a patent pending filter with a simplified design, and BOREAS CoolBridge filter that combines our sustainable cooling segment, ECOPaper Bridge, with mono acetate and our patented Finewall Tube, to create a balanced retention and cooling mechanism.

The new BOREAS range gives customers the option to create a customised, multi-segment filter by combining various types of base rods that are available in Filtrona’s comprehensive collection.

Hugo Azinheira, Global Director of Innovation and ESG at Filtrona said, “As more of our customers move into the rapidly growing HTP market, the launch of our BOREAS range of HTP filters is timely and exciting for consumers and the wider industry alike. We are thrilled to support our customers with a dedicated range of HTP filters that bear the hallmark of our innovative and unique designs.”

“We have the capability to design unique and complex filters not only for combustibles, but also for HTPs. As consumer demand for HTPs continues to grow, Filtrona’s new BOREAS range will enable HTP manufacturers to deliver the next generation of products that deliver the expected level of quality and user experience compared to conventional cigarettes whilst also meeting regulatory requirements.”

Filtrona enters the HTP market with a century of filtration experience and chemistry delivery expertise, an unparalleled drive for innovation and R&D, and world class global manufacturing capabilities. In addition, the company’s Scientific Services laboratories in Indonesia offers independent and comprehensive testing facilities for HTPs, including thermal profiling and aerosol intensity tests. This gives Filtrona the distinct ability to offer HTP companies a one-stop-shop solution to support the launch of their HTP products into the market.

Azinheira continued, “Our industry knowledge helps companies to catch emerging trends, adapt to changes and build strong brands. For any of our customers that are looking to enter the HTP segment, collaborating with our team of experts can significantly speed up the product development and commercialisation processes, giving them a crucial edge in the market.”

Our history

Our filter business has a rich heritage as an innovation leader. Following the development of the first patented filter in 1924 by Boris Aivaz, Moritz Bunzl began to manufacture filters commercially in the late 1920s. The first dedicated facility was established in Jarrow, UK in 1948. Bunzl grew internationally by establishing a presence in the US in the 1905s and expanding into Asia in the 1970s and 1980s. The name Filtrona was adopted in 1979 and was also adopted by the Group of manufacturing companies that were demerged from Bunzl in 2005. In 2013, the Company changed its name to Essentra plc to reflect its diversification into industrial components. In November 2022, the successful filters and tapes divisions were sold to new owner Centaury Management Limited. The business is now rebranded as Filtrona again, a compelling name with a rich legacy of innovation and supported by strong industry partnerships.
